How Radon gas enters your home.

While recent findings may prove that granite countertops may emit Radon gas, there has been a tremendous amount of attention of late on Radon Gas.  The important thing to make sure you consider is NOT how much radon may be coming from your countertop but, the overall concentration of Radon in your home.  If the Radon concentrations are high, it is more than likely a result of other sources rahter than your countertops.

Make no mistake about it, Radon gas causes cancer.  Peter Jennings died from lung cancer and did not smoke
People who have never smoked are dying of lung
cancer.  For example Peter Jennings.

Radon is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless
radioactive gas produced by the natural breakdown
of uranium found in some rocks, sediments, and
water. Radon gas is present naturally outdoors,
however the concentrations that we are typically
exposed to are thought to cause minimal risks.
Radon moves out of the ground and dilutes to
harmless levels in the atmosphere, but it can
accumulate to high levels in houses.

Radon levels in excess of recomended levels, are associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Radon can enter a home through openings in basement walls and floors. Radon concentrations in a home can be lowered by sealing these entry points, by depressurizing the sediment around home foundations, and by improving home ventilation.

If Radon concentrations above safe levels in your home exist, you SHOULD act immediately to reduce the Radon levels in your home.  This is usually a simple process.
